Oh lord, maybe on the laptop go to whatismyip.com to get the ip address, then go to domaintools.com and see if the ip addy is aol or whatever.

elswhere

Everyone who does tech support/network admin for their relatives (including RW, who has untangled my network & wireless issues more times than I can count) deserves an extra special prize. Maybe an exalted seat in Online Heaven, or something.

Oh lord... it's so much worse than I thought - it turns out he's been paying $25 a month for aol dialup since the dawn of time.

blaize

If he hasn't been using aol though and they can tell by checking the account usage records he might be able to get a refund, (not holding breath on that one but worth a try).

Second thought; wasn't windows ME the first of the home MS products to include system restore? You might be able to resurrect shell32.dll from there.

badgerbag

Blaize that's good advice... I tried many, many dates for the system restore, to no avail. It would just restart itself in a long process, claiming to be "restoring" and then give a message about how that date woudl not work and I should try another.

He uses the aol constantly and is now freaking out that if he cancels it he loses 10 years worth of email. Surely he can export it though probably not on his own steam without help. I am hoping vaguely that one of the cousins in town can do it for him and import it into something else.

blaize

He can also use the free aol and get all the benefits of all the addins that he's used to, free.aol.com.

If you can't find the ME cd you might be able to download shell32.dll from one of the drivers sites because shell32 problems are pretty common, you might also find a registry hack if you search around.

blaize

Sorry this might be a stupid question but did you actually delete shell32 or just dump it in the recycle bin? If it's in the bin just open and click restore.
