My grandma has one of these masks and I remember my dad and I doing a paper mache project where he steered me to making one like it. Mine didn't have horns but in every other way was like this - and painted like it - with the eye rings built up with molded wet paper. then I have some photos of a procession ... It's just odd to see something and realize so many years later "Oh! that's what that was! It has a name!" in a weird little cultural disconnect/connect. So when I see the photos of this mask on the web site I feel the claustrophobic weight of it on my face and smell the rotten-flour smell of the paper maché.
oh i remember that mask... wasn't it painted with like floresent paint?

Yes! I think it was day-glo poster paint. Made at the kitchen table in our house in Detroit... 1977, 78?
