sports would benefit from having some made-up backstory

This is what televised wrestling does -- provide a whole narrative context for the bouts. And, in a way, this is also true when two teams with established rivalries meet, and sometimes on the radio station that broadcasts Giants games, there is a somewhat extensive and dramatic introduction to such games that gives the "story" of the rivalry. But yes, there's certainly room for much more, if anyone went to the trouble of doing it.

I gotta agree with Toobeaut, there. Wrestling is pretty much "sports to the tune of a soap opera." There's actually some guy out that that did a paper on how the storyline to WWF has it's finger on the nation's cultural pulse, and if you want to know what the next big thing will be, look at wrestling. It was interesting.

Of course, I only have a passing interest in wrestling, because of a handful of Trekkies... so maybe it's just a fanboy thing.
