Rook is playing an untrustworthy character? Imagine my astonishment!

Actually, the thing about the people of shadow not being real or having agency is something that bugs me about Amber in general.

That's why I'm playing a deeply racist/classist character... the Amber thing feeds directly into his beliefs about some people being naturally superior to others. We're all kind of playing it up. We're suddenly royalty, and superior... Family loyalties and loyalty to the structure of reality demand that we use Shadow-person lives like the most callous of generals and kings. I bet a lot of serious Amber-heads talk about this all the time.

Also: many parallel universe stories explore hopelessness, despair brought on by knowing whatever you do in one time stream, it's being done another way in others. Our characters made a huge point of assassinating Hitler, but the bad guys just went to another time stream and brought in a new Hitler, which maybe had an effect in that other time stream, but ours is still messed up. What's that one cheesy story that does it so perfectly... that has the many endings where the guy shoots himself in the head or doesn't and goes crazy because of being aware of all the branching possibilities of time?

Which is all to say that I find Amber a perturbing and interesting world to play in - much more interesting than I thought it would be.
