Wow... Alice Sheldon lived in a house a couple of blocks away from where I lived in Chicago. I probably walked by her family house a zillion times! She was at 5344, I was at 5140. Well, separated by a lot of years, but that doesn't count.
Now I wonder if she went to the Lab School! I dug through their archives with such mad intensity when I was scanning all those photos.

Holy shit! She did! In 1925!
Let's see some photos... some girls playing basketball ... and here's some younger kids in the library. Oh, most horrifying... these photos of 1927 freshman girls with dresses they made themselves in sewing class.
I really loved that photo archive! I was obsessed with it for months.
To think I ethernet-wired the basements of the halls that Sheldon trod...and installed many an rj-45 jack in her old classrooms. Yay! I'm such a nerdy fangirl!
I think the 20s was when the Controversial Photo was taken... all very hush hush... these odd photos of naked children wearing sunglasses, being irradiated with healthful sunlamps which later gave them skin cancer or something so that even in the 80s and 90s there were still lawsuits. It was when they first discovered Vitamins and the way you need sunlight to metabolize them.
so there i'm looking throught the photos and i click on one called "art class," of course. and there she is, alice bradley, big-eyed, long curls, sitting at the right. did you see that?

No wayyyyyyyz! That's so excellent! Well, I had my mitts all over that archive and I scanned the photos and lovingly stuck them on a somewhat amateurish web site in 1996.
Yay Alice Bradley!
I noticed a lot of the art in the 20s and 30s looking suspiciously excellent but I always assumed it was the teacher guiding someone's hand a bit too much. Maybe it was all about Alice.
