Then I went to the living room window because of the screaming mosh pit of raccoons & my mom hissed from the front room window, "you're scaring her!" So we turned off all the lights again and waited silently, standing on her pillow, for a long time while tiny chirruping baby raccoons tried to climb down the trellis. One of them had to be carried down. I felt so lucky to think that my mom was (of course) the sort of person to stand in the dark after midnight on her own bed trying to catch a glimpse of the baby animals that woke her up, without having to say anything.
