I just read this book by Vonda McIntyre from 1983 where she basically invented email spam and the bayesian filter. Hahah! cool!
That and the cyberpunky chip-in-the-head stuff were incidental to the main point which was sleazy, slashy romantic melodrama between the hyperspace pilot without a heart and the nice guy who likes to cook stirfry and darn your socks and is sort of an earnest, plucky, talented pioneer dude. You figure he has a high "tracking" skill and if he were in a role-playing game, he'd do barbarian things. Then, some sweet sexual tension between the whale-fucking genetically engineered atlantis woman and, well... It was awesome. Really it was about communication and languages shaping or revealing realities and everything groovy and metaphysical, but I liked the slashy aspect. I can't believe I never read this and it's a whole series.
