It's a bummer that it's "too crazy to go into thesis" because it's really cool and interesting. It's gotten ME thinking.

Lisa Hirsch

You could get a journal article out of that list, I bet.

badgerbag

Screw a journal article, it will be a ranty manifesto!

Lisa Hirsch

That too!

It's weird how strongly metaphors of patriarchal descent and bastardy come through in literary criticism.

And not just literary criticism: any field is just full of this kind of thing, the story about the one true patrilineal line of descent. For one single for-instance, all the women (like May Sinclair) who were interested in psychoanalysis before 1914 and set up the Brunswick Square Clinic in London and are only just now being given any credit after decades of true-sons-of-Sigmund. Women always tend to be there at the beginning when the field is fluid, and does not provide a lot of orthodox career path opportunities, prospect of large salaries, etc, and then once the field is established they not only get squeezed out, they get written out of the histories as well.

badgerbag

Agh! You have no idea how much that resonates with me right now - think of blogging as a new field and you've nailed it.
