Uncle Bob from the Astrodome & Reliant... now has his own place now in Corpus Christi... and he's getting lots of publicity... I hope it ends up helping him. He was from St. Bernard Parish which got flooded again by Rita...

let's get real. they didn't manage to ship EVERYONE out of state, though they certainly tried. thousands of people in motels right now... with no cars and no money. when their red cross free hotel runs out, then what? they're homeless, where do they go? No one knows.
frustrating, not sure if i did any good:
- austin RC says there is only one shelter left in austin (can't be true! they must be in churches)
- austin RC says they shipped buses and buses full of evacuees (katrina & rita) to the George R. Brown convention center, like, yesterday. those evacuees aren't there anymore. where did they go?
- city of austin hotline says there are 2 shelters in austin. (this turns out not to be true)
- I call the rc back to tell them the city of austin has incorrect info, please correct them. they refuse.
- city of austin says the old fema phone is not working, but here is the new one: (and that number turns out not to work)
- I weasel the shelter manager's phone number for the Tony Berger Center, the only RC shelter left
- shelter manager very helpful, can take new people, dont care if Rita or Katrina, but it's a small shelter
- I call city of austin back and tell them to try the fema phone, see what they get, and correct more of their info. i advise city of austin guy to check all info. "It comes from our public information center." You mean, the joint information center, Incident Control, i.e. homeland security? "Um... well... uh, yeah. who are you??" "I strongly advise you to try other avenues to get your most current information, or to doublecheck it by calling the numbers they give you, yourself." *pause* "Er, okay. Who are you again?" (I barely resist the impulse to say "YOUR MAMA!!!!!")

- salvation army ctr. why in pasadena, off tollway, not on public transport, so far from DRC disaster resource center? suggest they at least have shuttle buses from drc to pasadena site.
- call list of doctors who were offering free services last week, locations, plot on map, hours, are they still offering?
tonight: put together list of tiptree nominees
