What about the sentient planet GL? Or the idiotic dog GL? Or, or...

At any rate, while you're absolutely right that the situation creates fans who believe they know the character as well or better than the writers (and why not? Some of them have been reading about that character since before the current writers were born), pushing the character and narrative without violating that belief is only one of the options. Another, and this has been done to pretty much every character that DC publishes, is to reboot the character and say "None of what you read before ever happened." Yet another is to continue the character, but in such a way as to violate the fans long-held beliefs. (Alan Moore did this with Swamp Thing, and was acclaimed. Ron Marz did this--at the behest of the editors--with GL and was reviled. Only part of the reaction to each was attributable to the vastly different levels of talent between the two.) Some characters have had both happen to them.

Have you read Chabon's The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay? It's a good novel that tugs on all kinds of interesting threads related to the birth of the comic book form during the incredible WWII era, and it delves into and parallels the homoerotic/homo-escapist representation of superheroes in a way that I haven't seen before. Good characters and writing, too.

I have about 150 Spider Mans. Most of them have complete smaller story arcs, like they would have an entire year in which his suit was haunted and turning him evil and etc.

Talking of beardy men behind the counter .. have you seen the comedy series 'Black Bo0ks'? The episode where he goes to work in a comic book store. And I have a feeling that you have still never seen the series 'Spaced', which has a huge cult following.
