I've spent a lot of time over the last few days pointing out to various people that a lot of rumor and misinformation flies around at times like these. Given the chaos on the ground, not to mention various people's motivations to stretch or distort the truth, I am taking everything I hear or see as provisional information. Then there's the matter of interpretation: Shots fired into the air could be "shooting at rescue helicopters," but it seems a lot more likely to me that if it is indeed happening, people are shooting to get the attention of rescue helicopters.

And we all need to be reminded that cameras can lie, either by framing the image in ways that distort or remove the context, or by simple repetition -- e.g. by showing the same images of people looting over and over.

I haven't turned on the TV all week: I've been relying on radio and the print media (via computer).

This is very telling.

To summarize, National Guard troops arrive in New Orleans expecting violence, and instead find exhausted, dehydrated, hungry people who just need help. Oh, and rather than looters impeding rescue efforts, at least one account of cops deputizing looters to ferry people out of flood areas.

Charmaine Neville's tape confirms that people were indeed firing in the air to attract help.
