Interesting. Given that "the important thing is not trying to build this engine for real - it's being aware of the engines in your own head" I'm not sure how much to get into the details.

I guess you know that citation indexes which attempt to rank the importance of works by how often they're cited in other works have been around for decades, long predating "search engines". Some institutions reputedly base tenure decisions on them.

And CiteSeer, a bibliographic search engine mostly focusing on computer science and related disciplines, gives you a bar chart of the number of citations of a work over the years.

Sorry for telling you what you already know. To put the same foot back in my mouth, I guess you probably also know all about the big digital corpora that can be sliced and diced six ways from Sunday. The web interfaces to these things tend to be simple but the computational linguists and semicolon counters have tools that will tell you how many seven-letter words omitting the letter E occur on the same page as a paragraph with an odd number of syllables. Or whatever.
