ear piercing

At the cafe bad-ass mamas meeting this morning Eliz. showed off her newly pierced ears. I feel like we oldsters stole her thunder a little, by accident by telling our own piercing stories. Maybe Eliz. can get a new ear piercing each year so that by the time she's a punk teenager she'll be pre-cooled and pre-punked!

My piercing story was that I had pierced ears at 11. At 12 I pierced my own ear an extra time because I heard that if you have one earring, or if you had an odd number of earrings (opinion differed wildly on whether it mattered in which ear the extra asymmetrical earring resided) then that meant you were gay. I recall sitting on the sink with my icecube and sewing needle and desperately hunting around as I experienced that thing where you go through the first layer of the ear and then get a little stuck as you have to punch again through the BACK layer of the ear. Oook! Finally, success.

I didn't really expect my dream lesbian sugar mama to swoop down out of the sky and take me away, but it was nice to think that when she did, I'd be ready. And I didn't really expect anyone else to notice it and bond with me. It was like a pact with myself for the future, and maybe just in case anyone else might have that extra earring and might look at me for maybe 5 extra seconds while we feathered our hair in the bathroom with our curling irons, we might look at each other and Know.

For months I successfully hid the "lezzie earring" from my mom by keeping it under my (feathered) hair. I wore a specially dangly earring in there to emphasize it. As I didn't have any dangly earrings but only discreet little-girl earrings, I made my own dangly multi-strand, multi-level one out of beads. When it wasn't proving my daring gayness at school, my hippie-ass dangly thing (blue embroidery floss and wooden beads) convinced the stoner chicks in my P.E. class that I was one of them even if I didn't have boobs and had never given anyone a blow job (their criteria for membership in their hang-out group.)

But then she my mom saw it and freaked out. She did not know the thing about gayness, I'm sure, but she considered it against the natural order, and therefore disgusting and revolting, that asymmetry in holes in one's body could exist. So she made me take it out. Alas for my lezzie earring!

My friend Lanie in high school was not allowed to wear dangly earrings because her mom thought they were "too adult" and "would provoke her dad". We cursed their hypocrisy, pinpointing that somehow, dangly earrings signified sexuality or sexual availability.

Lanie would change into dangly earrings at school sometimes (her one rebellion, other than being my friend). By that point I was shucking about 3 layers of clothes once I got out of sight of my house (pantyhose forced onto me - shucked. slip and camisole- shucked. sweatery thing - it was toast. then I'd just be in a skirt and tank top -- joy!)

ah, piercing stories. i don't remember how old i was - 6th grade i think, so that's what ... 11? - when i finally got them pierced at the mall.... but i was under no circumstances allowed to wear "dangly" earrings. those were basically for hookers, my dad said. but, like Lanie, i would sneak them to school and wear them all day and then take them out before going home. except of course once in a while i would forget and get yelled at.

that didn't piss my parents off that much though - not as much as the tattoo i got when i was 17. that REALLY pissed them off.

and not because they are some sort of puritan yuppies - just the opposite. both my parents had been hippies/roadies/wildchildren, and so my dad was really against his daughters doing things like piercing and tattooing because that's what the women HE thought were hot looked like. didn't work though. now he's got two pothead daughters with peircings and tattoos galore. like father like daughter.

I very much wonder what makes dangly earrings only for hookers? Lipstick has that whole story about how it means that you suck dick, right? And eyeliner and eyeshadow are supposed to give you a sultry sunken-eyed look as if you'd stayed up all night having sex. But why dangly earrings?

I would totally pay to have shoes that print "follow me" from the bottoms of the soles (I think i've said this before) maybe in latin so that only bookish nerds would take me up on it.

Speaking as a daddy, any prejudices I might have about manner of dress would be but a gnat's eyelash next to the towering freakout I would have if a kid of mine poked holes in herself! That's what professionals with specialized equipment are for. If I'd been your mom I think I would have fainted dead away with visions of hepatitis, irreparable nerve damage and gangrene...
