Probably wrote this before, but whenever I think of Gide, I think of his surprise and delight in describing the taste of delicate, buttery, creamy South American tree grubs.

No, I'm an idiot--I'm remembering Claude Levi-Strauss's fevered, maddening, curtailed trip, described in Tristes Tropiques.

Gide, now, he was the fellow fascinated by the bloated, floating hippopotamus carcasses in Travels in the Congo. His imagery is less savory than L-S, in that book at any rate.
