I am nearly done grading. What a relief that will be!!!
7 students who are still on my roster stopped coming to class a while back. So I just emailed them all and asked them if I could fill out the form to help them drop the class with a W. I imagine (actually, I know) that life gets complicated and you don't have time to go screw around with that kind of detail.
It's been hard to watch the students who stuck with the class sometimes going through rough times and I admire them for staying in class. I really don't want anyone to get an F just because they didn't figure out (or know at all) that it's important to do an official drop.
Luckily the form is just their name, some numbers, the class #, and a checkbox for "reason dropped". The whole rigamarole with the form is pretty dumb and there is no reason to have it. To me it just means extra hassle and possible screwing up, unnecessary complication for a person who needs to withdraw from a class because they can't handle it for one reason or another. Dumb!
