I'm in the middle of Tamsin, a YA book by Peter S. Beagle... it's amazing! And it's one of the best teenage girls written by a guy that I've ever read. I met Peter at Writers With Drinks a few months ago, and heard him read... now that I see how good Tamsin is, I'm going to make a point of reading all his books.
Last night was hellish as right at the crucial good part of Tamsin, around midnight, the lights went out. I continued a while with a flashlight. Moomin woke up (or, hideous thought, wasn't asleep yet?) and would not go back to sleep. He was creeped out despite the candles and flashlights in the bathroom for nightlights. He kept getting up. And I kept waking up. Without the air filter running, Rook's loud snoring omfg I could not sleep but was in a terrible haze of drifting off and being yanked awake again (even through earplugs) and then Moomin would be up and querulous about the lights... I yelled at Moomin a bit, after some attempts at patient explanation and comforting, and figured he'd drop off from exhaustion. Finally Rook got up to comfort Moomin for the millionth time (he had started a round of sad, fake coughing) and slept in his tiny narrow bunk bed with him. He said this morning that Moomin didn't sleep until maybe 4:30 am. We were all cranky and tired... but Rook let me sleep extra. I just hope Moomin gets through his school day without melting down.... I emailed his teacher to explain and to ask her to go easy on him.
I wish Rook could have stayed home and slept all day! I was such a bitch about the snoring, and totally should have slept on the couch... but the waking-up, my god, I was aching all over as if I were lying on rocks after having been beaten up, semi-delirious...
I'm going to take a good long walk today or a bike ride to make sure I sleep well tonight. It's gorgeous out! Maybe some gardening!
